The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe—Study Notes
Here are some study notes I wrote on the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The focus of these notes is to show that Christ and the Word of God are prevalent throughout the book the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. What is also clear is that suffering is throughout the book and throughout the Word of God and foundational to the life of Christ—Check out these 18 pages of notes.

"You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. Peter – tools - - “the time to use them is perhaps near at hand. Bear them well.”
He received a shield .......(with a red lion on it).........and a sword
Ephesians 6:10-18 - 10
· Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
Susan – bow and quiver full of arrows and a little ivory horn
“Use them in great need, for I don’t mean you to fight in the battle....and when you put this horn to your lips and blow it, I think help of some kind will come to you.”

Patches of green appear on the landscape - - water is running in the streams and off the trees – “the trees shook off their robes of snow”.........and the sled finally becomes so stuck - - they have to get out and walk - - and Edmund’s hands are tied behind his back and he’s forced to walk faster and faster - - and he’s slipping on the grass and snow....and being whipped by the dwarf....
Flowers were seen ....the sky was blue.........and soon the “whole woods were ringing with birds’ music...”
The dwarf comments - - this isn’t a thaw - - its spring.....Your winter has been destroyed, I tell you. This is Asian’s doing....and the queen comments “if either of you mention that name again you will be killed instantly...”
Chapter 12
Then, the beavers and kids arrive at the stone table, at a place where you could look down on the whole forest - -to the east was the sea......
The stone table –
- a great slab of grey stone supported by four upright stones
- it looked very old
- it was cut with strange lines and figures that might be the letters of an unknown language
On one side of the open place was a pavilion – and high above it on a pole – a banner - - which had a red lion on it.....
Then there was music - -and when the kids looked that way - - they saw aslan -- - surrounded in a half moon shape by all the animals - -

- four great centaurs
- horse part
- man part
- unicorn
- bull with a head of a man

But when they saw aslan - -“they didn’t know what to do or say...”
“People who have not been to narnia sometimes think that a thing cannot be good and terrible at the same time...if the children ever thought so, they were cured of it now...”
“When they tried to look at Asian’s face they caught just a glimpse of the golden mane and the great, royal, solemn, overwhelming eyes; and then they couldn’t look at him and went all trembly..”
Read pp. 123-129
Chapter 13
The witch determines if she kills edmund there would only be 3 at cair paravel - -and if there were three - -the prophecy could not be fulfilled.....
The dwarf replies - - “what good would that do now that he is here - - he did not dare mention the name aslan..
The dwarf then says to use edmund as a hostage......
The witch decides to take her troops to the stone table for a final showdown - - thinking “I have my wand to turn them to stone...”
An interesting exchange between the witch and the dwarf - - - p131-132
Then while the queen was readying edmund for his execution by knife - - a nighttime raiding party of centaurs, unicorns, deer and birds freed edmund and were taking him back to the stone table......but the queen got away.....
The queen and the dwarf were turned into a stump and a boulder respectively by the queen once the knife was knocked from her hands........... And after the raiding party left they began to talk to one another.....
The next morning the children were informed that their brother was recaptured - -and in the morning he was seen talking with aslan in the dewy grass......
Aslan reintroduces edmund to his family by saying - - “here is your brother – and there is no need to talk to him about what is past.”
- Ephesians 2:8-9 - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast.
- Heb 10:17 - Then he adds: "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more."
Edmund shook hands with each of them in turn and said “I’m sorry”.
- Luke 15:10 - In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."
The kids could think of nothing to say......
- Gal 6:1 - Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.
- 1 Peter 4:8 - Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
Forgiveness
Then – the dwarf approaches Aslan – led by the leopard –
Aslan says – what is your message “Son of Earth” ......interesting.....
And the beaver listens to the dwarf and makes some side comments - -
Aslan says – “Peace, Beaver”
The witch appears - - - which brought shudders down the backs of the children who had not met her - - just at the sight of her face... and everyone felt suddenly cold.....
Mrs. Beaver noticed the witch never looked Aslan in the eyes......
The discussion:
Witch - “you have a traitor there”
Aslan – “His offence was not against you.”
Witch – “have you forgotten the deep magic”
Aslan – “Let us say I have forgotten of the deep magic – tell us of this deep magic.”
Witch - - “Tell you “ – she shrilled - -tell you what’s written on the very stone table that sits beside us?”......tell you what is engraved on the scepter of the Emperor Beyond the Sea...??? You know that every traitor belongs to me and for every treachery I have a right to a kill.”.... SO, that human creature is mine...his life is forfeit to me....his blood is my property....
Then the bull with the man’s head said – then come get him......
Witch – “He knows (she never mentions Aslan’s name) that unless I have blood – as the law says - - all Narnia will be overturned and perish in fire and water.”
Aslan – “It is very true... Fall back all of you and I will talk to the Witch alone.” (doesn’t call her the queen)
Aslan concludes – “I have settled the matter – She has renounced the claim on your brother’s blood.”
The witch turned with a look of fierce joy on her face when she stopped and said, “How do I know this promise will be kept.”
Aslan roared and his great mouth opened wider and wider and his roar grew louder and louder..... and the witch ran for her life......
Chapter 14
Starts off where aslan is preparing peter for the battle – one for fighting the witch – the other for assaulting her castle
“But you will be there yourself aslan”.....
Aslan replied “ I can give you no promise of that”
And then the girls decide to follow aslan as he walked that evening - - “his tail and his head hung low and he walked slowly as if he was very, very tired.”
“His royal head drooped so that his nose nearly touched the grass.”
· In the Garden of Gethsemane - - - Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." Matthew 26:38
The kids walked with him.....
And finally they arrive at the last tree on the hill of the stone table - - and aslan says they must stay there, and not let themselves be seen.
Many people were standing around the stone table – many of them carried torches which burned with evil looking red flames and black smoke
· Picture the scene in the garden of gethsemane, when a “multitude” approached - - it was around 1am - - pitch black - - except the torches from the huge crowd seeking to capture Jesus
All these evil creatures.....And the witch stood at the side of the table....
And aslan approached - - and the queen shrilled – “the fool – the fool has come - - bind him fast!!!!!!”
· Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard." Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Rabbi!" and kissed him. The men seized Jesus and arrested him.
Quick timetable of Jesus last hours:
· 1am – garden of gethsemane
· 2am – went to annas the high priest
· 3am – went to caiphas (mocked by soldiers)
· 5am – Pilate and Herod
· 6:30am – decision of Pilate
· 7am – scourging
· 9am – 3pm - - crucifixion
They bound the lion – putting him on his back and tying all four paws together - - “shouting and cheering as if they had done something brave, though, had the lion chosen, one of those paws could have been the death of them all.”
· Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?"Matt 26:53-54
“But he made no noise, even when the enemies pulled the cords so tight it cut into his flesh.”
· He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. Isaiah 53:7
They began to drag him to the stone table – but the witch stopped them - -and said – let him be shaved !!!!”
· They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, Matt 27:28
After the shave – the enemies said – “why, he’s only a big cat afterall...Is that what we were afraid of???
“ And they surged around aslan jeering at him saying things like ...poor pussy.. How many mice have you caught today cat.....Would you like a saucer of milk????”
· Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!" In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! He's the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, `I am the Son of God.'" Matt 27:39-43
And they muzzled him - - and those who were afraid found courage...and the crowd of creatures were kicking him, hitting him, spitting on him, jeering him....
· Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?" Matt 26:67-68
· When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 1 Peter 2:23
And then they tied him “so that he was a mass of cords” to the stone table - - a hush fell over the crowd....
· 1 peter 2:24 - He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.
The witch grabbed the evil looking knife........and before she plunged it into aslan - - she said –
· “Fool, who has won now?”
· -“I will kill you but what prevents me from killing him (Edmund) as well?”
· “You have given me narnia forever!!!”
· “you have lost your own life and have not saved his”
· “In that knowledge, despair and die”
· Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Heb 9:26
The witch then killed aslan
· In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. Hebrews 9:22
· He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. Romans 4:25
· But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
Chapter 15
Lucy and Susan approach aslan after the creatures left, remove the muzzle and “burst out crying again and wiped away the blood....”
In the light of dawn - - for they had been there for hours - - they noticed the mice all over aslan, hundreds of field mice, chewing the cords off of Asian’s body......the mice crept away when finished......
· As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Matt 27:57-58
They heard a great cracking, deafening noise “as if a giant had broken a giant’s plate...”
The table had been broken - - by a great crack that ran down it from end to end.”
· At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. Matt 27:51
(It took 200 men to hand the veil - - it was 80 feet high – 25 feet long and 6 inches thick - - and it was torn from top to bottom - - - immediately - - man could not have done it)
Lucy and Susan were lost – and they asked “is it more magic??”
And aslan behind them said “yes, its more magic!”
“Aren’t you dead” asked Lucy....
“Not now” said aslan...
· He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: `The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' Luke 24:6-7
“You’re not a - - - “she couldn’t bring herself to say the word ghost...”
· Now Thomas , one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it." A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Matt 20:24-28
Aslan stooped his golden head and licked her forehead.....
“Do I look it?” Aslan asked
“What does it mean asked Susan.....
Aslan replied:
· Thought the witch knew the Deep Magic, there is magic deeper still which she did not know. Her knowledge goes back only to the dawn of Time. But if she could have looked a little further back, into the stillness and darkness before Time dawned, she would have read there a different incantation. She would have known that when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor’s stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backwards.”
· For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. Romans 6:9
· "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" 1 Corinthians 15:55
· The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 1 Corinthians 15:26
· But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. Hebrews 2:9-10
The three played, aslan roared, and then the children rode on Asian’s back to “take care of business”
Chapter 16
Aslan arrives at the castle.....
Aslan goes to the courtyard – breaths on the statues - - and they come to life!!!
· Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. John 20:21-22
Lucy saw Aslan breath on the feet of the giant.... And aslan said, “it’s alright, once the feet are put right, all the rest of him will follow.”
· The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks. Luke 6:45
Next, aslan says “now for the inside of this house!” They had to look everywhere......
...And Lucy finds Tumnus - -and once he was breathed on - - they danced around holding both hands - - dancing round and round with joy!”
· Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thes 5:16-18
Once they were done - - every door and window were open and the light and the sweet spring air flooding into all the dark and evil places which needed them so badly........
· He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. John 1:8-10
· This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God John 3:19-21
The giant then smashed down the doors and aslan informs the group they are going to find the battle.....
And aslan says – “those who cant keep up will ride the backs of the faster ones - - and those with good noses must come in the front with us lions to smell where the battle is....”
· And the other lion says “did you hear what he said - - us lions- - that’s what I like about Aslan – no standoffishness - - -us lions - -that meant him and me....
· Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matt 11:29
Finally - they arrive at the battle scene - - and they see Peter and Edmund and all the rest of Aslan’s army fighting desperately against the horrible creatures...”
There were sooo many of them and a few of aslan’s army - - and statues dotted the entire battlefield.....
Peter and the white witch were fighting - -
and Aslan made the children get off his back - - and he flung himself on the white witch - -
· Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against the rider on the horse and his army. But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had performed the miraculous signs on his behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped his image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. The rest of them were killed with the sword that came out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh. Revelation 19:19-21
and the rest of aslan’s army attacked madly on the enemy’s line ..And Peter’s tired army cheered!
Chapter 17
The battle was all over a few minutes after their arrival.....
“It was all Edmund’s doing, Aslan. We’d have been beaten if it hadn’t been for him.” Peter said....
Edmund was mortally wounded, and Lucy got the potion ad poured some on Edmund’s mouth.... Aslan instructed Lucy to tend to the others - - and she said, “wait a minute” to aslan....
“Daughter of Eve” Aslan replied, others are also at he point of death...Must more people die for Edmund?”
Aslan restored all those turned to stone and Lucy used her potion to heal...
Aslan returns to the castle – to the 4 thrones and makes all four of them kings and queens....
Aslan – “once a king or queen in narnia – always a king or queen
· Eternal perspective!
The 4 kings and queens rewarded all of the good animals
There was a party and dancing that night
Aslan slips out and Mr. Beaver concludes – “he’ll be coming and going – he doesn’t like being tied down – and of course, he has other countries to tend to...he’ll often drop in, but don’t press him - - He’s wild you know, not like a tame lion.”
The 4 rulers worked on wiping out the rest of the queen’s army
Made good laws and kept the peace
They entered into alliances with countries beyond the sea
Peter grew and became King Peter the Magnificent
Susan – became Queen Susan the Gentle
Edmund – became King Edmund the Just (great in council and judgement)
Lucy – became Queen Lucy the Valiant
While all 4 went to find the White Stag – if you caught it would give you wishes - - and they all 4 ended up at the lamppost in a thicket - -
And as they walked in the thicket - - -
They noticed they were walking among coats - - and the next movement - -they are tumbling out of the wardrobe door into an empty room....
And they were no longer kings and queens - - just themselves again......
And it was the same day and the same hour of the day that they had entered the wardrobe the first time......
So – they tell the old professor who says they will not get back to narnia by that same route - - of course, they would get back to narnia again someday.....
Once a king in narnia, always a king in Narnia!!!!
And so – this was the end of the story of the wardrobe but only the beginning of the adventures of Narnia!
