Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these
forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your
heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. He humbled you, causing you
to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers
had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word
that comes from the mouth of the LORD. Your clothes did not wear out and your
feet did not swell during these forty years. Know then in your heart that as a
man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you. |

sons: "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose
heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he
punishes everyone he accepts as a son." Endure hardship as discipline; God
is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you
are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are
illegitimate children and not true sons. Moreover, we have all had human
fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should
we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! Our fathers disciplined us for
a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that
we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but
painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace
for those who have been trained by it. |

For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping
may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. |

will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. For he does not willingly

Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good
things come? Why should any living man complain when punished for his sins? Let
us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD. |

streets. Their skin has shriveled on their bones; it has become as dry as a
stick. Those killed by the sword are better off than those who die of famine;
racked with hunger, they waste away for lack of food from the field. With their

food when my people were destroyed. The LORD has given full vent to his wrath;
he has poured out his fierce anger. He kindled a fire in Zion that consumed her
foundations. |

the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on

"For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will
bring you back. In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but
with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you," says the LORD
your Redeemer. "To me this is like the days of Noah, when I swore that the
waters of Noah would never again cover the earth. So now I have sworn not to be
angry with you, never to rebuke you again. Though the mountains be shaken and
the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my
covenant of peace be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you.
"O afflicted city, lashed by storms and not comforted, I will build you
with stones of turquoise, your foundations with sapphires. I will make your
battlements of rubies, your gates of sparkling jewels, and all your walls of
precious stones. All your sons will be taught by the LORD, and great will be
your children's peace. In righteousness you will be established: Tyranny will
be far from you; you will have nothing to fear. Terror will be far removed; it
will not come near you. If anyone does attack you, it will not be my doing;
whoever attacks you will surrender to you. "See, it is I who created the
blacksmith who fans the coals into flame and forges a weapon fit for its work.
And it is I who have created the destroyer to work havoc; no weapon forged
against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.
This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and this is their vindication
from me," declares the LORD. |

I know, O LORD, that your laws are righteous, and in faithfulness you have
afflicted me. May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise
to your servant. Let your compassion come to me that I may live, for your law
is my delight. |
