1998 - Emily Hunt - When Emily was 4 yrs old in 1996, Hoosiers and friends
worldwide were introduced to the incident at Old Indiana Fun Park. During a
tragic ride at Old Indiana, Emily suffered a spinal cord injury and her 57 year
old grandmother, Nancy Jones, was killed. Emily, who spent 101 days in the
intensive care unit and rehabilitation hospital due to her numerous injuries,
was left paralyzed from the chest down with a complete spinal cord injury.
While she controls movement of her arms, Emily has no movement of her hands and
fingers. This condition is not expected to improver over her lifetime. As a
result of her injuries and paralysis, Emily requires assistance to breathe and
requires ongoing respiratory therapy to maintain her pulmonary functions. On
October 4, 1998, the second annual "Emily's Walk for Spinal Cord
Research" will take place at the historic Indianapolis 500 Mile Speedway.
